My trip to the Leaning Tower of Pisa
As a lawyer, most of my days are filled with structured arguments, case files, and long hours in the office. But on my recent trip to Italy, I decided to step away from the courtroom for a bit and soak up all the history, culture, and just the sheer wonder of travel. One of the highlights of my trip was standing in front of the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
When I got to Pisa, I was pretty excited. The city itself has a chill vibe, with narrow cobbled streets, small cafes, and an atmosphere that immediately reminded me that Italy is as much about slowing down as it is about history. When I got to the Piazza dei Miracoli, the first sight of the tower was almost surreal. I'd seen a ton of pictures, but seeing it in person was a whole different experience. The white marble popped against the blue sky, and its slight tilt made it look almost delicate, like gravity itself had been defied.
As I got closer, I couldn't help but admire the architecture—rows of elegant arches stacked on top of each other, perfectly symmetrical despite the tilt. For a second, I let go of my legal mind and thought about art and history as an observer. This monument was started in the 12th century and has withstood wars, natural disasters, and centuries of skepticism. It's like the kind of endurance you often need in law—staying strong even when the going gets tough.
I joined the other visitors in the classic ritual of posing for photos that playfully interact with the tower—pretending to hold it up, push it down, or lean alongside it. These moments were fun, but they also showed something deeper: that everyone is amazed by the same things. No matter what our background is—whether we're lawyers, students, or travelers—we're all in awe of history.
Climbing to the top was an unforgettable part of the visit. The spiral staircase, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, offered a great view of Pisa and the surrounding Tuscan landscape. From up high, the red-tiled rooftops stretched on and on, and the Arno River shone in the distance.
I was standing there thinking about balance. Just like the tower, which keeps leaning but never falls, life is all about finding a balance, even when things get tough. As I left the Piazza dei Miracoli, I had more than just photographs; I had a new perspective on how to mix law with the joy of discovery.
